Welcome to In Dire Straits!
This web site is dedicated to the those classic movies, comics, and magazines of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. And we'll also look back at the classic movie serials of the 40s. Although I never saw a serial at a movie theater, they used to play continuously on TV in the 50s when the local channels needed material to fill their broadcast hours.
Those of you who are familiar with our sister site WAVE Movies know that we have used the name In Dire Straits for many of our movies since the late 80s. In fact, we used it back in the late 70s and early 80s when we produced a newsletter that featured movie reviews, comic strips, and articles about both the movies of the time and the movies from the previous decades.
I shot the original Fanny Starr movie on super 8 film and then used a new invention called the VCR to play it on TV and dub dialogue and music to it. It was loaded with cliffhangers like the old movie serials and The Man from Uncle and Lost In Space.
This web site will offer some of the movies that influenced me back way back when. Features such as The Brain That Wouldn't Die!, Bucket of Blood, Frankenstein, Brides of FuManchu, King Kong, and The Woman Eater. These only scratch the surface of the movies that I used to see on both TV and at the local drive-in.
In the 1960s, a local TV station would show 3 horror movies in a row on Saturday nights and would include all the classics from the 30s, 40s, and 50's.
